ELECTING A RESPECTFUL, INCLUSIVE AND ACCOUNTABLE LOCAL GOVERNMENT WILL BE A START TO IMPROVE LANGFORD FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

ELECT A LOCAL GOVERNMENT THAT WILL PROMOTE MEANINGFUL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TO ENSURE INFORMED AND UNDERSTANDABLE DECISION MAKING

I am running for Langford Council to find solutions for the issues that are important to many of Langford residents and to me. I love my community and I want to make living in Langford better for everyone. I've talked to lots of people in the community; individuals, families and business owners to better understand their concerns. The top priorities that stand out to me are; good governance, healthy environments, better planned development and affordable housing for all. There is an opportunity for a new council to improve Langford for future generations.

GOOD GOVERNANCE requires a Mayor and Council who are independent thinkers, good listeners, respectful and demonstrate ethical principles. Council needs to be accountable to the public for their decisions. Trust between council and public needs to be restored. People want easily accessible information to understand the process and rational as to how and why council made their decision. They want to be assured that decisions reflect what is in the best interest of the community. As a Langford councilor, I will make it my priority to work in collaboration with residents to change the culture in City Hall and rebuild that trust. I think changing the times for public meeting to hours that are more convenient for the majority of residents could be a start. Langford Council needs a Code of Conduct policy and I will work with other councilors to implement a policy. I also support creating an internal audit committee to examine best practices in service delivery to ensure the community is getting value for our tax dollars.

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT is fundamental to create a vibrant city that is flexible to the changing needs of the residents. The City of Langford prepared an Official Community Plan (OCP) in 2008 which has been amended numerous times but not fully reviewed. As a councilor I will advocate for Langford to have a new OCP. In 2008 the population was about 25,000 and today it's estimated to be over 46,000. Our city is growing rapidly and we need a new vision to guide us on issues of land use, economy, environment, infrastructure, transportation, fire and police protection, residents health and well being, community arts and cultural centers and recreational amenities that supports development, urban growth and resilient neighborhoods.

OUR ENVIRONMENT is crucial to our overall quality of life in Langford. We have to protect the ecosystem we have from pollution, deforestation and global warming. Healthy ecosystems clean our water, purify our air, maintain our soil, regulate the climate, recycle nutrients and provide us with food. With industry and urban sprawl expanding at unprecedented rates we need to understand the trade-offs we are making between nature and development. There needs to be a balanced approach because our future depends on it. As a councilor I will bring forward your issues concerning the protection of trees, greenspace, creeks, the riparian and flood plains and the agricultural land with a goal to pass progressive bylaws and policies.

HOUSING AFFORDABILITY is necessary in Langford for both renters and owners. Langford has had an affordable housing program since 2004. It is a good start but attainable housing is still a problem. Affordable housing cannot just be dependent on local governments. Federal government and other levels of government also have a responsibility. Council must partner more with other levels of governments, developers and non-profit organizations to create a sustainable model for affordable housing. This year the Federal government committed 5 Million in funding and 1 Billion in loans to a new co-operative housing development program. Co-operative housing in Langford is one solution.  Other solutions are more complicated however during a process for a new Official Community Plan there will be a better understanding of what works best for directing housing programs towards the needs of specific community residents; such as seniors, families with children, people with special needs and those at risk of homelessness. As a councilor I will work with the community and Council to come up with innovative solutions to provide affordable housing for all levels of income earners in the City of Langford.
